Bob Duff: Cholowski's chance to prove he's ready for prime time If Detroit Red Wings' 2016 first round pick Dennis Cholowski wants to be in the pros this season, he needs to prove he's ready for that assignment in preseason play.

Thanks Bobby D.

Sounds like Chowser isn't playing NHL anytime soon by the coaches comments.

He's probably better off not in the bigs the way the Wings will be going this year anyway.

Chin up BD!

I'it's better for him to go eat a bunch of minutes and develop his offensive game in the WHL.

100%. He'll probably get a look through the season at some stage if he's at GR. can he come up from anywhere else or only the ahl if he's playing there?

Once he's sent to Prince George he won't be allowed back in the AHL/NHL til after the WHL season, expect him to get some looks in GR near and through the playoffs.

If he is assigned to GR at the start of the year, he can move back and forth between the AHL and the NHL.

If he is assigned to major junior, he must complete his season there. He cannot be recalled to either the AHL or NHL until the CHL offseason. This is due to the transfer agreement between the NHL and CHL.

Ordinarily, CHL players are ineligible to play minor league professional hockey until age 20. They can only leave juniors if they make their NHL squad out of camp. Cholowski is 19, but because he was drafted out of Junior A and played college hockey last year he is not yet subject to the CHL transfer agreement and could be assigned to the AHL. If he is sent to juniors, the agreement applies and he'd have to remain there.

This is my understanding; if I am wrong feel free to correct me.

Holland is trying to fast track Cholowski to the NHL because he blundered not drafting Chychrun. Chychrun's injury buys him a little time. My prediction... Cholowski never plays an NHL game.

I'd prefer he join the AHL. Grand Rapids is a good team, he would play against tougher/more physically mature players, and play with future Detroit teammates. Nelson should start him on the 3rd pair.

IMO he has the skills to be an elite #3. Something similar to Kronwall.

I wanted Chychrun at #16 as much as everyone else did, and while he did have a good rookie season as an 18-year old, he hasn't shown himself to be anything special yet. Give it a few years before you jerk off to the thought of Holland "screwing up" again (as you usually do).

Hindsight is 20/20 but that trade was an absolute win for Detroit at the time. We won't know until at least 2020 who actually "won" that trade.
